Sassy Salsa Dance Lessons
Article by Peter
Dancing is an art form that allows participants to thoroughly express themselves and express what the music is allowing them to feel at that present moment. Whilst certain dance styles are based mainly on technique, others are heavily based on expression and emotion. One such dance style is the salsa, which is a dance that originated in Cuba many, many years ago. If you have always enjoyed watching salsa movements because of the saucy, sultry emotions that go into it, you can start attending salsa dance lessons so you can actually be able to do those moves yourself.
Although the salsa dance originated in Cuba, its style represents the meeting point of African and European popular culture. There are aspects of African and European culture that came together to create this type of deep-rooted and emotion filled dance routine. The Spanish word “salsa” actually means “sauce”, which in American Spanish usually refers to a spicy flavor or a mixture of spicy flavors. That meaning is definitely applicable when it comes to the salsa dance because there is just so much sauciness as well as well a mixture of movement and expression when doing it.
Most salsa dance lessons that are available will teach the dance as a partner dance where two people are allowed to act out particular roles. However, there are also recognized solo forms of salsa where some level of improvisation can be included.
Before you start your salsa dance lessons, you need to be prepared for the fact that the music played for this type of dancing usually ranges from about 150 beats per minute to about 250 beats per minute. If that does not have much meaning to you, it basically means that the music for salsa is usually very fast paced. Therefore, you will soon need to learn how to quickly move your feet to be able to do them according to the beat.
The salsa dance has evolved over the years and styling techniques have become a very integral part of this dance. Movements likes spins, body isolations, leg work, arm work and shoulder shimmies are popular styling techniques used for salsa today. Although there is the traditional salsa from Cuba, many of these styling techniques have allowed other cultures to have their own spin on this traditional dance technique.
Depending on which type you are interested in, you will can find the salsa dance lessons to teach you just what you want to learn. Places like New York, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Panama and Cali in Los Angeles all have their own take on the salsa based on the involvement of that particular culture in redefining it.
Although this dance style may seem intimidating at first, by the time you take enough salsa dance lessons you will realize how attainable learning this routine is. Do not hesitate to go out and start salsa dance classes. You will be surprised how quickly you will catch on and how much of yourself you will end up putting into it.

Godsend,
We do the annual 5 de Mayo celebration and our candidates for queen usually do a folkloric dance number as part of the pageant. This year our instructor broke her foot and I had to step in and teach the girls a dance. This book was a godsend. The steps are easy and I am sure they will look great on stage.
